To our knowledge, this boat is truly unique. A two person kayak with a motor is a difficult ask — but BKC has managed to incorporate not just one trolling motor, but two of them.

OK, we’re gonna break one of our own rules here. We’re going to list the same kayak twice. Honestly, whether it’s a motor or pedals you want, the Brooklyn Kayak Company’s PK14 excels in both.

It’s not that you can’t find a better kayak with pedals. (We’ve put together a guide on that, too). But for a two-person pedal kayak at an affordable price, you really can’t go wrong with the PK14. That’s because the Brooklyn Kayak Company’s design allows for interchangeable propulsion from both seating positions — whether it’s a trolling motor or its bicycle-style pedal drive.

Like its motorized version, the PK14’s pedal drive includes a hand-controlled rudder, but this one also includes two paddles for those who like to work their upper bodies, too. The pedal drive system can be instantly reversed — think bike pedals — for easy mobility.

The raised metal-frame seats are exceptionally comfortable for hours of casting, and gear storage options are plenty.

If you’re paddling solo with your dog, simply remove the front seat (which is super comfortable and adjustable) for your pet. And if you’re tandem kayaking with a dog, there’s a space between the seats where Fido can sit comfortably (or even add a third, padded seat).

With two sealable hatches, stationary and swivel fishing rod holders and two bungeed storage areas, the Voyager doesn’t skimp on gear hauling. When you’re not paddling, simply secure your paddles (included, by the way) to the sides of your kayak to keep them out of the way.

The Voyager’s 5mm rotomolded polyethylene hull can take a beating, but it’s actually not that heavy for a two person kayak (77 lbs). And a 550-pound capacity isn’t bad.

While most tandem kayaks are family boats, there are certain features that moms and dads might look for in a two person family kayak.

Will my child be comfortable? Will I  be comfortable? Will my wallet be comfortable? With the Driftsun Teton 120, the answer to all these questions is “yes.” The Teton is very similar in design to the Voyager (above), with many of the same perks — wide, stable base, gear storage options and plenty of seating.

While the Voyager is probably the better kayak of the two, the Teton is slightly less heavy (72 pounds). Both kayaks feature a center molded seat for a child (or dog), but the Teton’s seats are high-back padded vs. aluminum-framed seats on the Voyager — a difference that ultimately comes down to personal preference.

Both kayaks feature fishing rod holders, sealable dry storage pods, cupholders and bow and stern tankwells. While the Teton lacks the swivel rod holders the Voyager boasts, it does offer two mounts for adding Scotty gear — a great option if you’re looking for a little family fishing getaway. The Teton also comes with a pair of aluminum paddles.

While we won’t say the Teton is the best tandem kayak on our list for families, its relatively lower price point might be selling feature.

Double kayak, double fun?

Tandem kayaks are a great option for families looking to spend time together, but they’re not for all situations. Before buying a two-person kayak, consider whether two solo kayaks might work better.

Two seater kayaks: Pros

• Easier to stay close together as a family. Especially for parents of young children, keeping the gang together can be much easier if everyone’s on the same boat.
• Less expensive. While you can buy some great solo kayaks on a budget, generally, a tandem kayak will be cheaper than two single kayaks in the long run.
• Helpful for inexperienced paddlers. If one paddler has experience, but the other does not, a tandem kayak can take some of the pressure off learning how to paddle.
• More versatile. Unlike a tandem bicycle, a tandem kayak can still be paddled solo. In fact, many two person kayaks are also designed for solo paddling — with the extra space being used for gear. Tandem kayaks typically have a higher weight capacity, too.

Two man kayaks: Cons

• Can be more difficult to paddle. Don’t underestimate how much harder a 12-foot kayak can be to maneuver than a 9- or 10-foot boat. If the second paddler is inexperienced, it might make for a difficult afternoon.
• Heavier. In order to accommodate an additional paddler, tandem kayaks are usually bulkier boats. This might make transport and storage more difficult.
• Less maneuverable (usually). Tandem kayaks are usually wider — which provides greater stability, but at the cost of speed and maneuverability. Unless you’re talking about a tandem sea kayak built for racing, most two-person kayaks don’t track as well. This is because a kayak’s tracking is a product of its hull design and width.
• Shareability (or lack thereof). Like having one car, having a single kayak means two people can’t simultaneously share the boat — unless they want to go together. And for families with teenagers, we know that’s not always the case.

While there are many different types of kayaks, newer paddlers might prefer a sit on top kayak to a traditional, “sit inside” model for a few reasons. For one, it’s much more difficult to tip a sit on top kayak — and it’s literally impossible to sink one. If you do happen to capsize, you won’t get caught underneath — which can be a risk with sit-inside kayaks.

• Stability: Besides acting as a power source for your kayak, the propeller unit also serves to balance the boat a bit better. Especially on kayaks with wider beams, anglers can usually stand to sight-cast with no problems, and bigger guys can paddle without fear of capsizing.

How to Choose a Pedal Kayak

Besides the traditional factors to choosing a great kayak, there are several additional factors to consider in a kayak with foot paddles.

Pedal Style

While most pedal kayaks nowadays are built with rotational, bicycle-style pedals, not all are. Some kayaks, like the Hobie i11s and the Pro Angler 14 on our list, instead utilize a push-pedal, fin-powered system. Both have their advantages, but in general, bicycle-style pedals are easier to use (using less energy), while push-style pedals have stronger propulsion.

Most, if not all, pedal drives can operate in forward and reverse.

Propeller Docking

While propeller systems are great for deep water, it can be pain to manage if the boat runs aground in shallow depths or weeds. Every good pedal kayak should have a way to access and remove the propeller system in these cases.

Some propeller-docking systems are more intuitive than others. The best pedal kayaks are able to instantly dock the propeller with the click of a switch or the lift of a handle — even without leaving the boat (our favorites for this feature include Wilderness Systems’ Radar 135 and Old Town’s Predator PDL).

Some even allow you to swap the unit for a trolling motor or remove it altogether for additional dry storage space.

Rudder Control (Steering)

Naturally, one question new pedal kayak buyers might have is, “If I don’t have a paddle, how do I steer?”

The answer, most often, is a hand-controlled rudder. An adjustable fin that’s usually positioned at the stern (back of the boat), a rudder sets the kayak’s direction while your foot pedals propel you forward. A kayak with rudders and pedals gives you better control over your boat.

Usually, rudders are controlled by a lever either to the left or right of the cockpit chair. Consider choosing a boat with an intuitive (left is left, right is right), easy-push lever that can be locked in place. If you’re right-handed, choose a lever control to your left side (and vice versa) to keep your strong hand free for casting.

Portability

With a hefty propeller system in tow, pedal kayaks are typically on the heavier side. Most pedal kayaks range from 85 to 130 pounds. While some kayaks allow you to remove the propeller for transport, you’ll still want to consider a boat with handles for carrying it to and from the water.

Stability

In general, stability is a function of a kayak’s beam (width) and profile (height and hull shape), but a propeller system can make a bit of a difference. Most pedal kayaks for fishing are designed to be stable, but if this is a top concern for you, choose a boat with a wider beam and lower, flatter profile.

Usually, a 33″ wide beam is plenty wide enough for initial stability, but 36″ or more can provide a little extra comfort.

As far as we can tell, FeelFree is the only major kayak brand to offer both pedal drive and motor drive in the same system. In other motorized kayaks such as Hobie or Wilderness Systems, the drives must be swapped out (usually on shore, as the motor units are quite heavy) to switch between the two; not so for the FeelFree Lure. To add motor capability to the Overdrive pedal system, simply slide the Motordrive power unit into the open slot on the console, and away you go!

Most manufacturers offer some type of kayak trolling motor mount — whether inboard or outboard — or at least can recommend accessories to make installing a motor easier.

Native Watercraft has made this easy with its Transom Motor Mount, which comes in two sizes to fit its Propel kayaks in the Slayer, Ultimate FX, Manta Ray and Titan series. The mount can be attached and detached in less than 30 seconds, allowing you to drop a trolling motor such as a Minn Kota into the slot where the Propel pedal drive system goes. When you’re done, simply remove the mount and drop the pedal drive back into place (or, do what this guy did and keep both systems).

As far as the kayak itself goes, Native boasts that the Slayer Propel 10 is the lightest premium fishing kayak on the market, weighing in at just 62 pounds before the Propel drive or motor is added. The kayak’s comfortable seating, hand-controlled rudder system and true-tracking, stable hull make the Slayer a great choice for those looking to bring in a big haul without dishing out huge bucks.

While installing an aftermarket motor is easy with the Propel 10, anglers who want to use the built-in pedal drive system will find superior control, since the pedal drive system works in both forward and reverse. If you thought inflatable kayaks were just for kids’ pool parties, you haven’t been paying attention to the kayak scene lately. Today’s inflatable kayaks are mean, lean fishing machines and tough enough for even the harshest of fishing conditions.

But adding a motor? Is that even possible?

Well, yes, actually. It is.

So it should come as no surprise that Sea Eagle, long a leader in inflatable kayak design, has been among the innovators in the motor-powered inflatable kayak game.

Trolling motors just not doing it for you?

If you’re the “Tim the Toolman Taylor” type, maybe you’re looking at the kayaks above and thinking, “That’s it? I want more power!”

Although not recommended for casual anglers or recreational weekend paddlers, there are kayaks out there that can satisfy your need for speed. American Paddler isn’t comfortable recommending any particular model, but if you’re checking out options, the MACraft Power Ski claims to offer speeds up to 24.9 mph with its four-stroke, 152cc, 20-horsepower gas engine. Aquanami and Mokai are two other brands offering jet-powered kayaks with speeds up to 25 mph.

For those wondering, that’s really fast for a kayak. Adrenaline junkies looking for a kayak with a jet ski motor would be well-advised to check local boating laws to make sure all safety regulations are met before taking one of these vessels out on local waterways. Combining speed, stability and comfort in an almost seamless package, the Pungo 120 can be used on lakes and streams, for a casual paddle or an overnight adventure.

The multichined hull means the Pungo 120 is both fast and stable, and at just 49 pounds, it’s incredibly light for a performance kayak (it also comes in an upgraded “Ultralite” 40-pound model). We had a couple of options to choose from for our “best recreational kayak under $500,” but we settled on the Old Town Vapor 10 for a few reasons. Besides Old Town’s sterling reputation as a manufacturer of great kayaks, the Vapor 10 is one of the best sit-inside kayaks in its price range for accessibility and comfort.

A significant reason for this is its large, open cockpit. A rare feature among budget kayaks, the Vapor 10’s roomy interior is big enough for tall paddlers to get in and out of easily, and it’s also one of the best kayaks for dogs (at least medium-sized dogs), who can fit comfortably in the paddler’s lap.

For the same reason, however, the Vapor 10 is probably best paddled in calm lakes and rivers, as the larger cockpit opening can take on water more easily than most sit-inside kayaks in choppy conditions.

There aren’t many true 3-person kayaks on the market, but the Sevylor Big Basin inflatable kayak is probably the closest thing for the intrepid paddling trio. Like most inflatable kayaks, the Big Basin sacrifices a bit of performance to gain a lot in portability and price tag.

Still, for an inflatable kayak, the Big Basin tracks well, with a directional fin and heavy-duty tarpaulin bottom that slices through water. Consistent with most modern inflatables, the Big Basin features multiple air chambers and leak-proof seals, as well as puncture-resistant PVC construction.

While rated for three paddlers and 490 pounds, the Big Basin most comfortably seats two people — although parents could easily take a child along, too. Overall, a great choice for an inflatable kayak.

What makes a good recreational kayak?

As you might have noticed, kayaks vary widely in price. This is due to a number of factors, but primarily can be attributed to the following:

• Construction and material
• Comfort and luxury features
• Performance (stability, speed, maneuverability and tracking)
• Storage options

Construction and materials

From the least expensive inflatable kayak to the highest-end Kevlar or fiberglass performance boat, kayaks come in all kinds of makes and models. The most common body material for mainstream commercial kayaks is polyethylene — a basic, hard-shell plastic that’s durable and cheap to produce. Polyethylene tends to break down and fade in the sunlight, so kayaks with UV protection are considered better quality than those without.

Performance kayaks tend to be made of lighter weight, yet more expensive, materials such as carbon, Kevlar or fiberglass, but these boats can run into the thousands of dollars.

On the lower end, inflatable kayaks are typically made of a durable material such as PVC that won’t puncture easily and is resistant to leaks.

Comfort and luxury features

Ask any seasoned paddler to tell you the one piece of advice they’d give to newcomers, and they’ll tell you the same thing: invest in comfort. There’s nothing worse than paddling for hours in a stiff, uncomfortable seat or lugging around a paddle that weighs half as much as you do.

Various kayaks come with various comfort options, from adjustable seats, foot pegs and thigh braces to rolling skeg wheels and handles for better portability. Do your homework and make sure your kayak isn’t paddling you.

Some kayaks have extra bells and whistles such as conveniently located dry storage for phones and wallets, cup and water bottle holders, gear wells and customizable options for all kinds of coolers, fishing gear or safety equipment.

Performance

Perhaps the biggest factor in determining a kayak’s price is what matters most: performance. Different shapes and sizes offer different paddling tradeoffs. For example, wider kayaks tend to be more stable but harder to paddle, while longer kayaks are faster but harder to steer.

Performance kayaks cost more because their manufacturers have found ways to blend these aspects to create seamless performance on many levels. Hull shape and rocker play a role, but so do add-on features such as rudders, skegs and pedal drives that can greatly impact a kayak’s performance.

“Tracking” is an important term for a kayaker to know, as this affects how easily the boat paddles “straight and true.” Cheaper kayaks can be harder to maintain a straight line, making paddling more of a chore.

Storage options

As any good Boy Scout knows, you’re only as prepared as the gear you bring. For kayakers, this means storage space is a key consideration when choosing your next boat.

Kayak storage comes in many forms, but the most common for sit-inside models is a watertight “stern well” in which gear can be kept below deck and dry. It goes without saying that some kayaks offer bigger (and more) wells than others. Take into consideration the location, accessibility and size of these pods — as they might come in handier than you think.

The best recreational kayaks will also feature self-contained “bulkheads” below deck. A bulkhead is a stand-alone, airtight compartment that won’t fill with water if the kayak is submerged. Not only do bulkheads help by providing greater storage space, but they also might keep your kayak afloat if you do happen to capsize.

Typically, sit-on-top kayaks and inflatable kayaks don’t offer as much in the way of on-board storage. In fact, the Pyranha Fusion DLX sit-on-top is about as a close to the perfect whitewater kayak as the larger paddler will find. Combining the Fusion’s tried-and-true performance crossover hull with the stable platform of a sit-on-top kayak, the Fusion DLX runs rivers and rapids with ease.

In particular, the Sea Eagle SE370 is consistently among the best-reviewed inflatable kayaks for heavy people — or anyone, for that matter. It’s understandable that larger paddlers might feel a little apprehensive about buying a kayak. It’s a big purchase, after all, and you might worry about whether you’ll actually enjoy it. To make sure you do, keep the following tips in mind:

Will I capsize?

First things first — if you’re worried about tipping over or capsizing, make sure to choose a kayak with a wider beam. While most kayaks these days are built to be incredibly stable, for bigger people, it can still be a concern on narrower boats. In general, any recreational kayak with a beam of 30 inches or more will be more than stable enough for any paddler, and skegs and rudders that jut into the water will also help with kayak stability.
