Those dry storage areas are first and foremost flotation chambers. Don’t store anything in there that you need while you are on the water. Once you open the hatch cover, you have the potential to be swamped. Sit insides that don’t have at least a stern bulkhead or supplemental flotation tend to be cheap, but shouldn’t be paddled very far from shore.
