To our knowledge, this boat is truly unique. A two person kayak with a motor is a difficult ask — but BKC has managed to incorporate not just one trolling motor, but two of them.

OK, we’re gonna break one of our own rules here. We’re going to list the same kayak twice. Honestly, whether it’s a motor or pedals you want, the Brooklyn Kayak Company’s PK14 excels in both.

It’s not that you can’t find a better kayak with pedals. (We’ve put together a guide on that, too). But for a two-person pedal kayak at an affordable price, you really can’t go wrong with the PK14. That’s because the Brooklyn Kayak Company’s design allows for interchangeable propulsion from both seating positions — whether it’s a trolling motor or its bicycle-style pedal drive.

Like its motorized version, the PK14’s pedal drive includes a hand-controlled rudder, but this one also includes two paddles for those who like to work their upper bodies, too. The pedal drive system can be instantly reversed — think bike pedals — for easy mobility.

The raised metal-frame seats are exceptionally comfortable for hours of casting, and gear storage options are plenty.

If you’re paddling solo with your dog, simply remove the front seat (which is super comfortable and adjustable) for your pet. And if you’re tandem kayaking with a dog, there’s a space between the seats where Fido can sit comfortably (or even add a third, padded seat).

With two sealable hatches, stationary and swivel fishing rod holders and two bungeed storage areas, the Voyager doesn’t skimp on gear hauling. When you’re not paddling, simply secure your paddles (included, by the way) to the sides of your kayak to keep them out of the way.

The Voyager’s 5mm rotomolded polyethylene hull can take a beating, but it’s actually not that heavy for a two person kayak (77 lbs). And a 550-pound capacity isn’t bad.

While most tandem kayaks are family boats, there are certain features that moms and dads might look for in a two person family kayak.

Will my child be comfortable? Will I  be comfortable? Will my wallet be comfortable? With the Driftsun Teton 120, the answer to all these questions is “yes.” The Teton is very similar in design to the Voyager (above), with many of the same perks — wide, stable base, gear storage options and plenty of seating.

While the Voyager is probably the better kayak of the two, the Teton is slightly less heavy (72 pounds). Both kayaks feature a center molded seat for a child (or dog), but the Teton’s seats are high-back padded vs. aluminum-framed seats on the Voyager — a difference that ultimately comes down to personal preference.

Both kayaks feature fishing rod holders, sealable dry storage pods, cupholders and bow and stern tankwells. While the Teton lacks the swivel rod holders the Voyager boasts, it does offer two mounts for adding Scotty gear — a great option if you’re looking for a little family fishing getaway. The Teton also comes with a pair of aluminum paddles.

While we won’t say the Teton is the best tandem kayak on our list for families, its relatively lower price point might be selling feature.

Double kayak, double fun?

Tandem kayaks are a great option for families looking to spend time together, but they’re not for all situations. Before buying a two-person kayak, consider whether two solo kayaks might work better.

Two seater kayaks: Pros

• Easier to stay close together as a family. Especially for parents of young children, keeping the gang together can be much easier if everyone’s on the same boat.
• Less expensive. While you can buy some great solo kayaks on a budget, generally, a tandem kayak will be cheaper than two single kayaks in the long run.
• Helpful for inexperienced paddlers. If one paddler has experience, but the other does not, a tandem kayak can take some of the pressure off learning how to paddle.
• More versatile. Unlike a tandem bicycle, a tandem kayak can still be paddled solo. In fact, many two person kayaks are also designed for solo paddling — with the extra space being used for gear. Tandem kayaks typically have a higher weight capacity, too.

Two man kayaks: Cons

• Can be more difficult to paddle. Don’t underestimate how much harder a 12-foot kayak can be to maneuver than a 9- or 10-foot boat. If the second paddler is inexperienced, it might make for a difficult afternoon.
• Heavier. In order to accommodate an additional paddler, tandem kayaks are usually bulkier boats. This might make transport and storage more difficult.
• Less maneuverable (usually). Tandem kayaks are usually wider — which provides greater stability, but at the cost of speed and maneuverability. Unless you’re talking about a tandem sea kayak built for racing, most two-person kayaks don’t track as well. This is because a kayak’s tracking is a product of its hull design and width.
• Shareability (or lack thereof). Like having one car, having a single kayak means two people can’t simultaneously share the boat — unless they want to go together. And for families with teenagers, we know that’s not always the case.

While there are many different types of kayaks, newer paddlers might prefer a sit on top kayak to a traditional, “sit inside” model for a few reasons. For one, it’s much more difficult to tip a sit on top kayak — and it’s literally impossible to sink one. If you do happen to capsize, you won’t get caught underneath — which can be a risk with sit-inside kayaks.

How to Choose a Pedal Kayak

Besides the traditional factors to choosing a great kayak, there are several additional factors to consider in a kayak with foot paddles.

Pedal Style

While most pedal kayaks nowadays are built with rotational, bicycle-style pedals, not all are. Some kayaks, like the Hobie i11s and the Pro Angler 14 on our list, instead utilize a push-pedal, fin-powered system. Both have their advantages, but in general, bicycle-style pedals are easier to use (using less energy), while push-style pedals have stronger propulsion.

Most, if not all, pedal drives can operate in forward and reverse.

Propeller Docking

While propeller systems are great for deep water, it can be pain to manage if the boat runs aground in shallow depths or weeds. Every good pedal kayak should have a way to access and remove the propeller system in these cases.

Some propeller-docking systems are more intuitive than others. The best pedal kayaks are able to instantly dock the propeller with the click of a switch or the lift of a handle — even without leaving the boat (our favorites for this feature include Wilderness Systems’ Radar 135 and Old Town’s Predator PDL).

Some even allow you to swap the unit for a trolling motor or remove it altogether for additional dry storage space.

Rudder Control (Steering)

Naturally, one question new pedal kayak buyers might have is, “If I don’t have a paddle, how do I steer?”

The answer, most often, is a hand-controlled rudder. An adjustable fin that’s usually positioned at the stern (back of the boat), a rudder sets the kayak’s direction while your foot pedals propel you forward. A kayak with rudders and pedals gives you better control over your boat.

Usually, rudders are controlled by a lever either to the left or right of the cockpit chair. Consider choosing a boat with an intuitive (left is left, right is right), easy-push lever that can be locked in place. If you’re right-handed, choose a lever control to your left side (and vice versa) to keep your strong hand free for casting.

Portability

With a hefty propeller system in tow, pedal kayaks are typically on the heavier side. Most pedal kayaks range from 85 to 130 pounds. While some kayaks allow you to remove the propeller for transport, you’ll still want to consider a boat with handles for carrying it to and from the water.

Stability

In general, stability is a function of a kayak’s beam (width) and profile (height and hull shape), but a propeller system can make a bit of a difference. Most pedal kayaks for fishing are designed to be stable, but if this is a top concern for you, choose a boat with a wider beam and lower, flatter profile.

Usually, a 33″ wide beam is plenty wide enough for initial stability, but 36″ or more can provide a little extra comfort.

The valve hatch in the front of the kayak has three points of contact, making it watertight, and it extends deep inside the kayak and all the way back, making it useful for storing fishing rods.

There is also a sonar pod center console, which can be used for a fishfinder or transducer or taken out entirely if a pedal drive system is used in its place. It really is ideal for managing all of your electrical needs in a compact, watertight compartment. There are also built-in straps with a molded-in crate recess in the back for all your tackle needs.

The Feelfree Lure 13.5 kayak, which is slightly larger than the Lure 11.5, does have one more built-in cooler in the front, which could be an added perk for those longer trips.

Packed With Features You Always Knew You Needed

The Feelfree Lure 11.5 has a GoPro mount, which is convenient, saving you the hassle of drilling holes to create one yourself. Speaking of mounts, the kayak also features a lip to hold a paddle and two flush-mounted rod holders behind the seat, meaning you can be as hands-free as you want.

The Lure 11.5, along with the Lure 10 and 13.5, also comes with a Uni-Track gear mounting system for attaching just about any fishing accessory. The dual tracks on either side are great for adding additional rod holders, depth finders and many other electronics. That’s a plus, because once you install the adapter, you don’t need any tools to attach your gear, meaning it’s one less thing to carry. The only downside is, you have to get the adapter to make the UniTrack worth it.

The Feelfree Lure 11.5 might not be the biggest of the Lure kayaks, but at 11.5 feet and about 3 feet wide, it’s still a large kayak, which means at higher speeds the tracking system isn’t the best. Fortunately, depending on the type of kayaking you are doing, you can get a rudder, which easily attaches to the back and runs through the front to the foot pedals. With a rudder added, tracking is significantly better and makes for a much smoother ride. The foot pedals can also be adjusted easily for any rider’s height.

The Feelfree Lure Family

Like mentioned above, the Feelfree Lure 11.5 is part of a family of kayaks, with the Feelfree Lure 10 and Feelfree Lure 13.5. The Lure 10 has an appealing price, often selling for less than $1,000. It has fewer features, but is still a very stable and comfortable kayak with a smaller amount of storage. The Lure 13.5 is the big daddy of the group, weighing in at a whopping 95 pounds. It does have more storage space and is great for open water. In the end, it’s a Goldilocks effect as to which would work best for each person. But for the best of both worlds, in our Feelfree Lure 11.5 review, this middle sibling has it all without overdoing it or skimping on the things that make a difference to the average kayak angler.

As far as we can tell, FeelFree is the only major kayak brand to offer both pedal drive and motor drive in the same system. But adding a motor? Is that even possible?

Well, yes, actually. It is.

So it should come as no surprise that Sea Eagle, long a leader in inflatable kayak design, has been among the innovators in the motor-powered inflatable kayak game.

If you’re the “Tim the Toolman Taylor” type, maybe you’re looking at the kayaks above and thinking, “That’s it? I want more power!”

Although not recommended for casual anglers or recreational weekend paddlers, there are kayaks out there that can satisfy your need for speed. American Paddler isn’t comfortable recommending any particular model, but if you’re checking out options, the MACraft Power Ski claims to offer speeds up to 24.9 mph with its four-stroke, 152cc, 20-horsepower gas engine. Aquanami and Mokai are two other brands offering jet-powered kayaks with speeds up to 25 mph.

For those wondering, that’s really fast for a kayak. Adrenaline junkies looking for a kayak with a jet ski motor would be well-advised to check local boating laws to make sure all safety regulations are met before taking one of these vessels out on local waterways. We had a couple of options to choose from for our “best recreational kayak under $500,” but we settled on the Old Town Vapor 10 for a few reasons. Besides Old Town’s sterling reputation as a manufacturer of great kayaks, the Vapor 10 is one of the best sit-inside kayaks in its price range for accessibility and comfort.

A significant reason for this is its large, open cockpit. A rare feature among budget kayaks, the Vapor 10’s roomy interior is big enough for tall paddlers to get in and out of easily, and it’s also one of the best kayaks for dogs (at least medium-sized dogs), who can fit comfortably in the paddler’s lap.

For the same reason, however, the Vapor 10 is probably best paddled in calm lakes and rivers, as the larger cockpit opening can take on water more easily than most sit-inside kayaks in choppy conditions.

There aren’t many true 3-person kayaks on the market, but the Sevylor Big Basin inflatable kayak is probably the closest thing for the intrepid paddling trio. Like most inflatable kayaks, the Big Basin sacrifices a bit of performance to gain a lot in portability and price tag.

Still, for an inflatable kayak, the Big Basin tracks well, with a directional fin and heavy-duty tarpaulin bottom that slices through water. Consistent with most modern inflatables, the Big Basin features multiple air chambers and leak-proof seals, as well as puncture-resistant PVC construction.

While rated for three paddlers and 490 pounds, the Big Basin most comfortably seats two people — although parents could easily take a child along, too. Overall, a great choice for an inflatable kayak.

What makes a good recreational kayak?

As you might have noticed, kayaks vary widely in price. This is due to a number of factors, but primarily can be attributed to the following:

• Construction and material
• Comfort and luxury features
• Performance (stability, speed, maneuverability and tracking)
• Storage options

Construction and materials

From the least expensive inflatable kayak to the highest-end Kevlar or fiberglass performance boat, kayaks come in all kinds of makes and models. The most common body material for mainstream commercial kayaks is polyethylene — a basic, hard-shell plastic that’s durable and cheap to produce. Polyethylene tends to break down and fade in the sunlight, so kayaks with UV protection are considered better quality than those without.

Performance kayaks tend to be made of lighter weight, yet more expensive, materials such as carbon, Kevlar or fiberglass, but these boats can run into the thousands of dollars.

On the lower end, inflatable kayaks are typically made of a durable material such as PVC that won’t puncture easily and is resistant to leaks.

Comfort and luxury features

Ask any seasoned paddler to tell you the one piece of advice they’d give to newcomers, and they’ll tell you the same thing: invest in comfort. There’s nothing worse than paddling for hours in a stiff, uncomfortable seat or lugging around a paddle that weighs half as much as you do.

Various kayaks come with various comfort options, from adjustable seats, foot pegs and thigh braces to rolling skeg wheels and handles for better portability. Do your homework and make sure your kayak isn’t paddling you.

Some kayaks have extra bells and whistles such as conveniently located dry storage for phones and wallets, cup and water bottle holders, gear wells and customizable options for all kinds of coolers, fishing gear or safety equipment.

Performance

Perhaps the biggest factor in determining a kayak’s price is what matters most: performance. Different shapes and sizes offer different paddling tradeoffs. For example, wider kayaks tend to be more stable but harder to paddle, while longer kayaks are faster but harder to steer.

Performance kayaks cost more because their manufacturers have found ways to blend these aspects to create seamless performance on many levels. Hull shape and rocker play a role, but so do add-on features such as rudders, skegs and pedal drives that can greatly impact a kayak’s performance.

“Tracking” is an important term for a kayaker to know, as this affects how easily the boat paddles “straight and true.” Cheaper kayaks can be harder to maintain a straight line, making paddling more of a chore.

Storage options

As any good Boy Scout knows, you’re only as prepared as the gear you bring. For kayakers, this means storage space is a key consideration when choosing your next boat.

Kayak storage comes in many forms, but the most common for sit-inside models is a watertight “stern well” in which gear can be kept below deck and dry. It goes without saying that some kayaks offer bigger (and more) wells than others. Take into consideration the location, accessibility and size of these pods — as they might come in handier than you think.

The best recreational kayaks will also feature self-contained “bulkheads” below deck. A bulkhead is a stand-alone, airtight compartment that won’t fill with water if the kayak is submerged. Not only do bulkheads help by providing greater storage space, but they also might keep your kayak afloat if you do happen to capsize.

Typically, sit-on-top kayaks and inflatable kayaks don’t offer as much in the way of on-board storage. A good sit-on-top kayak should at least feature shock-cord bungee strapping to tie down gear, and some (like the Ocean Kayak Scrambler 11 above) even offer small dry storage pods for electronics and keys.

Storage and amenities

The biggest noticeable difference between the Aruba 10 and the Aruba 10 SS is in the generous amount of storage options aboard the SS. While both models offer a stern tankwell, the SS’s is noticeably larger (about twice the size, actually) — which offers more than enough storage space for extra clothes, drinks, snacks or rain gear.

In addition to the larger tankwell, the SS also offers a smaller electronics dry console conveniently located between the paddler’s legs — meaning there’s no fumbling through a dry bag when your phone suddenly rings out on the water. It can also be equipped with Sun Dolphin’s waterproof mini-Bluetooth speaker — a really cool accessory if you ask us.

Dollar for dollar, the Aruba 10 SS simply offers a heck of a lot more in terms of storage and convenience (than the Aruba 10).

Perhaps the coolest part, though, is Sun Dolphin’s innovative “Portable Accessory Carrier” system that allows the tankwell on the SS to actually detach and be carried independently of the kayak. This is immensely helpful for loading up before you hit the water, and it also means you can effectively double your storage space by towing the carrier behind your kayak while on the water.

If that wasn’t enough, there’s one other unique feature to the SS over the Aruba 10: dual cupholders on the kayak’s “dashboard” mounting system — again conveniently located within arm’s reach. Both models also come with a bungeed-down water bottle holder on the bow and side paddle holders.

Comfort

For a budget recreational kayak, the Sun Dolphin Aruba 10 SS doesn’t disappoint with its comfort options.

Big and tall paddlers will appreciate the Aruba 10 SS’s wider, more inviting cockpit compared to the Aruba 10, and the adjustable padded seat is a step above what you’ll find on most budget rec kayaks. The foot pegs are also adjustable, an added bonus for tall guys looking to stretch their lanky legs.

Though some have complained about sharp edges on the inside lip of the cockpit, the Aruba 10 SS’s protective thigh pads help alleviate this issue.

The protruded outside lip of the cockpit does accommodate a spray skirt if you’ll be paddling in cold or windy conditions — or simply don’t like being splashed.

Performance

Though budget kayaks aren’t usually known for their superior performance, the Sun Dolphin Aruba 10 SS isn’t bad for a fun, cheap kayak.

The first thing you’ll notice is that the Aruba 10 SS is incredibly stable and tip-resistant, making it a great starter kayak for lakes, rivers and calm bays. Thanks to its sleek, lightweight hull design, it’s also exceptionally maneuverable and turns easily, even for inexperienced paddlers.

The Aruba 10 SS does suffer a little bit when it comes to tracking (it doesn’t feature a skeg, unfortunately), but then again, it really isn’t designed for marathon day trips. As long as you stick to paddling calmer, recreational waters, it more than gets the job done.

Portability

For all the added storage aboard the Aruba 10 SS, it doesn’t lose its trademark lightweight portability. In fact, the Aruba 10 SS weighs just 44 lbs (only 4 pounds heavier than the Aruba 10) — meaning it’s easily handled by a single person.

As the name suggests, the Aruba 10 SS is 10 feet long, which is long enough for good performance yet short enough to fit easily atop most vehicles. Thanks to its shorter size, it can also be stored in places other kayaks can’t: apartment balconies, basements — or even in the back of some SUVs or pickups.

The Aruba 10 SS has front and rear carrying handles, which helps when carrying it to and from the beach.

Construction

The Aruba 10 SS is made of durable, UV-stabilized Fortiflex high-density polyethylene, which means three things for paddlers:

• It’s customizable for fishing rods, extra handles or equipment rigging,
• It’s not going to easily sustain damage from rocks and underwater hazards, and,
• You don’t have to worry about leaving it outside, since the UV-resistance protects against chipping, peeling or fading due to the sun’s damaging rays.

The Aruba 10 SS can hold up to 280 lbs, with passengers and cargo combined.

Drawbacks

If there’s one thing we wished this kayak had, it’s a drain plug. Since it doesn’t, we recommend a good spray skirt or bilge pump to keep the water out. It’s probably also worth investing in a better seat.

The Sun Dolphin Aruba 10 SS comes in a colorful array of blue, green, red and orange. Personally, we think the red looks sharp.

A great river fishing kayak

For kayak anglers who like to do a little of everything, the Predator MX is one the most versatile fishing kayaks on the market. A lot of fishing kayaks advertise stability, but this often comes at a price of compromised maneuverability and tracking — it feels like you’re paddling a barge, in other words.

With the Predator MX, you don’t have to make this tradeoff. This makes the MX a great kayak for both freshwater and saltwater fishing, because it can handle both waves and the numerous obstacles of a moving river with ease.

Not only is the Predator MX’s seat comfortable; it’s highly functional, with three different positions depending on what you need at the moment:

• Travel: Low to the water, perfect for extra stability while paddling or moving
• Attack: Raised, upright position for scouting, casting or reeling
• Stand-up: For those moments when a seat really just gets in the way, simply fold it up and get it out of the way

The Predator MX can hold up to 400 lbs, and its durable, metal-framed wide-back seat means it’s a great fishing kayak for big guys, too. Taller paddlers will also appreciate the sliding, lockable adjustable foot braces.

If you’re planning any marathon, 10-hour fishing expeditions, in other words, your legs and backside will thank you.

Fishing features

The Predator MX is almost just as versatile when it comes to hauling your gear. With six removable, high-strength mounting plates on the bow, stern and middle of the boat, you never have to worry about drilling into the kayak’s hull to make adjustments for extra rod holders, fish finders, GPS or GoPro customizations.

Storage and portability

The Tribe 9.5 is the smallest of Perception’s Tribe family of kayaks, with its cousins the Tribe 11.5 and Tribe 13.5 offering more speed (and weight) and better tracking. Still, the Tribe 9.5 more than holds its own here.

The biggest advantage to the Tribe 9.5’s small size is its accessibility for smaller paddlers and beginners. If your plan is to go ocean fishing, the bigger boats might be your better bet, but for lakes and slow rivers, the 9.5 offers more than enough stability and maneuverability. It’s also versatile enough to handle light surf — a bonus for those who aren’t sure where their paddling adventures will take them.

Even if your paddling adventure takes you nowhere but the middle of a calm lake, the Tribe 9.5 is stable enough to enter from the water, making this a great option for swimming or diving — not to mention fishing or other flatwater activities.

A breath of fresh air: Easy carrying and storage

If there’s one area where the Perception Tribe 9.5 really shines, it’s portability. Honestly, the folks over at Perception ought to win an award for this. Consider:

• The Tribe 9.5 weighs just 46 pounds — more than lightweight enough for a single person to handle
• Molded-in side handles that are actually part of the kayak rather than cheaply made dangling ropes. Not only does this help with portability, but it also means you can run ropes or bike locks through it as an anti-theft feature. (Why this isn’t standard practice, I have no idea.)
• If you own multiple Tribe kayaks — including the Tribe 11.5 or 13.5 — they’re stackable. No more garage takeovers!
• Because it’s both stackable and has molded-in handles, the Tribe is a breeze to tie to your car. And that’s assuming you need to tie it up at all, as the small Tribe 9.5 can easily fit in the back of most pickups.
• A replaceable skid plate means you won’t hurt the kayak dragging it to the water

Bring your dog, bring a cooler, bring a book

The Perception Tribe 9.5 is wide open and super-stable, a reassuring fact for those not used to sit-on-top kayaking. Lots of paddlers rate this kayak as one of the best kayaks for dogs or children, thanks to a wide, well-balanced deck for Fido or Junior to rest comfortably while Mom or Dad paddles. In fact, while the Tribe 9.5 is rated as just a solo-paddler kayak, there is space (and attachment points) for a second seat should you want to bring a child along.

Speaking of the aforementioned “cold drink,” the Tribe 9.5 offers plenty of room to bring a cooler — or anything else you want in tow — thanks to its generously deep stern tankwell and high-quality bungee strapping that keeps your gear secure. And it’s got a well-placed cupholder, should you need to put down the beverage for a moment to ward off “Jaws Junior” who’s intent on flipping Dad’s kayak.

In any case, we’d love to see him try. If ocean swells can’t flip the Tribe, an 8-year-old probably won’t have much luck, either.

Carefree comfort and flexibility

An uncomfortable seat can ruin an otherwise great kayaking experience for a first-time paddler, which is why the Tribe 9.5’s padded seat stands out among sit-on-top kayaks.

Unlike many flimsy sit-on-top kayak seats, the Tribe’s foldable high-back seat is actually attached to the kayak itself, providing better back support for longer paddling trips. When in use, the seat is folded up and supported by pressure-strength bungee cables, which offers a rigid feel similar to higher-quality metal frame seats. When not in use, the seat can be folded down for easy transport.

The seat back itself is also adjustable, which helps a lot depending on the size PFD you’re wearing.

Adding to the comfort for larger or shorter paddlers is the Tribe’s multi-channel molded-in foot wells, which allow for comfort in almost any seating position — knees up, knees down or legs straight ahead.

Keep your things (and yourself) dry

As any sit-on-top kayak owner will tell you, it’s impossible to keep all the water out. But with the Tribe 9.5’s multiple self-bailing scupper holes, you’ll at least keep most of it out. In fact, that’s one of the advantages of a sit-on-top kayak as opposed to a sit-inside version: the kayak does the work of bailing for you.

When water does get in, it doesn’t have to ruin your wallet or cellphone, thanks to the Tribe 9.5’s lockable 6” center hatch. Though the hatch itself is not watertight, it’s better than nothing when it comes to keeping your valuables splash-free, and it’s more than most sit-on-tops offer. We’d recommend investing in a dry bag, anyway.
